Welcome to Sherwood Lodge - the ideal setting for rest and relaxation.
Featured on the international television programme "Destination New Zealand", Sherwood Lodge was chosen because of the unique experiences and features which we offer our guests - so please take a few minutes to watch our part of the progamme to get a good idea of the lodge and what we offer you.
An historic country home, Sherwood was known throughout North Canterbury and Marlborough for the parties and receptions that were held - local lore has it that champagne corks were regularly picked up from the gardens the morning after the night before.
An invitation to the 1929 New Year's Party read "Dancing till dawn", a sentiment we like.
Built solidly in 1910 of concrete and river stone (downstairs) and in 1928 of plaster and lathe (upstairs), Sherwood's style reflects the golden age of farming in New Zealand - an age when farmers were the wealthiest members of society and their homes were show-cases for the best work tradesmen could do. Native and exotic timbers feature throughout the building.
Centrally heated throughout the house, three very large suites and two medium sized rooms provide guests with a calm and elegant environment to unwind in. The large guest lounge offers incredible mountain views, large open fire, board games, TV, music, and a substantial library to choose from. Complimentary WiFi satellite broadband is also available if you just can't get away from the demands of the office.
Meals with a distinctive North Canterbury flavour are an essential part of the Sherwood experience. Fresh regional produce includes Canterbury lamb and beef, wild venison, and salmon, with much of the fruit and vegetables coming freshly picked from our gardens. Our list of fine New Zealand wines is specially selected to include the best from top boutique wineries, particularly from nearby Waipara.
You are welcome to be as active or as lazy as you like while you stay with us. Relax in a hammock, swim in the pool or enjoy a round of golf. There is horse trekking through the high country and some of the best trout and salmon fishing you'll ever find - and there's lots more to choose from, it's up to you. We are also lucky enough to be located near the famous Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools, Kaikoura Whale Watching and many farms that are happy to take you on tours.
As owners and hosts, we like guests to feel totally at home in our home. Spoiling you is all part of the experience, and we hope you'll be able to make the time to join us in this special place.
We look forward to having you in our lovely lodge,
Craig Aitken & Philippa Turley
