Sherwood Lodge is located approximately half way between the thermal resort town of Hanmer Springs and the marine playground of Kaikoura, an easy 1 1/2 hour drive north of Christchurch city. Surrounded by high country sheep and cattle stations, the lodge is the perfect place from which to base yourself and explore the region.

Looking out the front door, you see a pastoral and alpine panorama that starts at the edge of the Hanmer Range and the middle of the Amuri Range, with Mounts Malingson, Terako and Tinline, with clear views of mountain conditions at Mt Lyford Ski Area. Looking further east you see the distinctive volcanic cone of Mt Cookson, and the escarpment of The Battery, with the native Lottery Bush forest reserve to the fore.

The property itself is tucked in the lee of Dog Hill, and above the Lottery River, sheltered from the prevailing Northwesterly winds that sometimes rage down the river valley like half a dozen freight trains running behind schedule.

The Lottery River flows into the Mason River, then down to the mighty Waiau ("rushing water" in Maori), finally reaching the sea 100km away. A braided river (one of the features of East Coast South Island), the river changes direction according to the snow melt off the mountains. After a good flood, you can find prehistoric seabed fossils along the river bed, washed down from the fault line further up the valley. Concretions push their way out of the sandstone cliff face, like pearls from a shell.
